A primary component of our school’s mission is to encourage lifelong learning. At Shorecrest we strive to create a learning environment where innovation and risk-taking are encouraged.
Last fall, Upper School History Teacher Kayla Brazee came to me with an interesting idea to expand our mission to the adult members of the Shorecrest community. Her proposal was to create an evening Faculty Workshop Series. These four-week long courses would combine the ability to provide professional development for faculty members with the opportunity for parents and community members to directly experience a Shorecrest classroom first hand and gain knowledge/skills in a topic or activity that interests them. Thus was born the Evening Charge!
Many of our Shorecrest faculty members have a wide range of interests. While they are able to bring some of these passions into the classroom on a daily basis, they are sometimes unable to "dive deep" into various interests and/or areas of expertise given time constraints and curricular priorities. At the same time, many Shorecrest community members are interested in getting to know the faculty and might want to pick up a new hobby, develop a new skill or learn more about a topic. In our busy world today, many people don't have the time or interest in taking a semester-long course, but perhaps would be eager to spend 90 minutes a week in a four-week session format expanding their horizons.
For this first session, there are five options of classes, listed below. These courses will involve lively discussions and hands-on experiences. It is an opportunity to meet other Shorecrest community members and explore various topics. Sessions meet weekly and start on Thursday, February 10. I hope that you will join us!
All the best,
Nancy
