Shorecrest School

Shorecrest Alumni

Head of School Letter

The daily focus of any school is mostly on its current students. However at Shorecrest the relationships that teachers/coaches/advisors build with our Chargers transcends graduation. Some of my most meaningful relationships with students have continued long after they have embarked on their lives after high school. The goal of creating lifelong learners who are ready for college and life beyond school means that we especially value our connections with Shorecrest alumni.

Engagement is integral to keeping the bonds of connection alive within the Charger world. Deep bonds exist among classmates, teammates and students who attended Shorecrest together. Two weeks ago, we debuted a powerful online networking and engagement platform called Alumnifire. Alumnifire helps Shorecrest alumni find Chargers in their area to build professional relationships through an online community, to connect for career advancement, mentoring and affinity groups. It also provides the opportunity to reconnect with friends, old and new and stay up-to-date with what is happening at Shorecrest. Already more than 100 Shorecrest alumni have signed up to join Alumnifire; and we are excited to watch the growth of this community expand.

Our goal is to always keep alumni up-to-date about the newest initiatives at Shorecrest. We invite all to visit and view the changed physical campus and meet students who are experiencing the Shorecrest of today. Alumni Weekend on October 20-22 is an excellent opportunity to connect with classmates and others, support the Homecoming Football Game, acknowledge recipients of the Athletic Hall of Fame and Alumni Distinguished Achievement Awards, celebrate 5-year milestone reunions, and open the time capsule outside of the Athletic Center.

In addition, we are reaching out to alumni as we provide gatherings in cities outside of St. Petersburg. Our New York City event last February laid the groundwork for taking the Chargers alumni experience on the road! This year, we have a number of alumni gatherings planned around the country. This week in Nashville, Shorecrest alumni came together and were delighted to rekindle old connections and meet new friends. One alum stated, “I’m so happy that you all put this together for us and loved connecting with Chargers of all ages. I had no idea that I lived down the street from a fellow alumnus!” Be on the look-out for upcoming alumni gatherings this year in St. Louis, Atlanta and New York.

Finally, each year we honor a Shorecrest alumni as our Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award winner. This year, we are delighted that Valerie Piper ‘83 has been named the 2022-2023 Shorecrest Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award Winner. From Shorecrest to Princeton to the University of Pennsylvania and on to leadership positions in mixed income housing and community economic development, Valerie has continued to model Shorecrest’s Mission and Core Values. Her unique skills and consistent efforts have improved the quality of opportunities for many communities and are an inspiration to current and future Chargers. Valerie will return to campus to speak to the Upper School about her career in Urban redevelopment, achievements and how Shorecrest affected her life.

For the past 100 years, it is alumni who have laid the foundation for the school we are today, a fact that is especially vivid this fall, as we celebrate our centennial. We relish the opportunity to connect and provide opportunities for alumni to engage with each other and with Shorecrest, long after each person’s school days have come to an end. Our goal is that the Shorecrest community creates a web of connections that sustains and enhances the life of all alumni, throughout their lives.

All the best,

Nancy
