"What Fills Your Cup?" Clay Mug Creation

Featured Lower School News

Shorecrest fourth graders are excited to begin a new project celebrating themselves just as they are now – during Shorecrest’s 100th birthday – called "What Fills Your Cup?" Shorecrest provides a variety of opportunities for students to explore their interests, and they are being encouraged to creatively represent their favorites on their own clay mugs. This clay mug creation and decoration project will be displayed in the Raymund Center where the centennial ceramic cupcakes were displayed last school year.

Life is like a cup, and it's up to each Charger to fill it with the things that bring them joy, inspiration, and fulfillment. By decorating their own hand-made clay mugs with their favorite things, students are not only creating beautiful pieces of art but also gaining a deeper understanding of themselves.

This week the fourth graders began working with clay to create their very own custom mugs. They are learning basic slab pottery techniques, such as handbuilding, shaping, smoothing, and glazing, under the guidance of Lower School Art Teacher, Lori Auletta.

Students have also been encouraged to think about their favorite activities, hobbies, interests, and dreams. They were provided with a list of Shorecrest-related activities to help ideas flow. From playing instruments to playing soccer to playing math games, they are using these ideas as inspiration for decorating their mugs.

The project is not just about crafting functional mugs; it's also a platform for self-expression. The students are encouraged to be as creative as possible while decorating their mugs with Chargers Spirit.

An exhibition will showcase their mugs with the help of Creative Director Jon Hoefer, and students can share the stories behind their designs on December 12, 2023.
