Shorecrest School

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Head of School Letter

Today the Shorecrest campus was full of activity as we welcomed over 600 Grandparents and Special Friends for an exceptional day with gorgeous weather! Shorecrest Chargers loved showing off their school to their grandparents and relished having their special friends with them for this day.

The purpose of Grandparents and Special Friends Day is to offer a glimpse inside the classroom and gain a sense of the daily life of Shorecrest by observing children and teachers engaged in learning activities. Student performances from a variety of grade levels provided the opportunity for visitors to see the progression of talented artists from our youngest students to the impressive production numbers from our Middle and Upper School musicals. Guests started the day with a continental breakfast and were invited to stay for lunch. By all accounts, this annual event is one of the most delightful of the year.

Shorecrest is fortunate to have an involved and active Grandparent Council. The mission of the Grandparent Council is "to encourage grandparent support and volunteerism at Shorecrest." If you live locally or will be in St. Petersburg visiting, we welcome your participation in a variety of volunteer opportunities: in the classroom, library, with Helping Hands or at an athletic event. Shorecrest students have benefited enormously from the volunteerism and financial support of grandparents, and we welcome such involvement.

The Grandparent Council also organizes several social and learning activities during the school year in addition to Grandparents and Special Friends Day. There is a monthly Grandparent Book Club, which provides attendees a chance to learn about new topics while getting to know fellow grandparents. Grandparents have also participated in Evening Charge, Shorecrest’s adult evening classes program. They have assisted in the classroom by sharing their knowledge as an expert presenter. They are steadfast athletic boosters, cheering our Shorecrest athletes to success in a variety of athletic endeavors. Grandparents are appreciative audiences and fill the seats in the Janet Root Theatre for many student performances, waving and smiling with pride and joy.

The Grandparent Council and Shorecrest’s Dads Night Out are partnering to bring Chargers a Family Day at Tropicana Field to watch the Tampa Bay Rays take on the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, May 21. All family and friends of the Shorecrest Community are invited to attend. [Learn more.]

The connection between generations is so important. Grandparents and Special Friends are important members of the Shorecrest community. Today’s cherished visitors understand the value and privilege of education. They enrich the lives of our students when they share their wisdom and life experiences. They help young people understand the remarkable opportunities that are available to them as Shorecrest students.

We are so grateful for the presence and perspective of all our visitors today. We hope that you enjoyed your time together and return often to the Shorecrest campus!

All the best,

Nancy
