Learning about Sea Life in Jr. Kindergarten

Experiential School News

Junior Kindergartners continue to learn about the sea. After their initial experiment comparing properties of fresh and salt water, each class created a web showing what they know and want to know about oceans. Now each class is deciding what aspect they are most interested in and want to pursue studying. As seen in the word webs, they currently seem to be most focused on learning more about the life in the sea.

From creating sea scenes that illustrate the life in the sea, to doing gyotaku (making prints of real fish), to doing experiments that demonstrate how the gills of the fish work to get oxygen from the water, the JK students are rapidly discovering and documenting the answers to their questions as well as more questions to answer.

The Junior Kindergartners also learned about impressionism and painting “au plein air” when they were introduced to and discussed the work of Claude Monet. The flower garden they recently planted in the outdoor classroom was the perfect location to experience this style of painting.
