Animal Rescue in JK

Experiential School News

This week during exploring, Shorecrest Junior Kindergarteners became animal rescue scientists! Mrs. Hahn froze miniature, plastic animal figures in blocks of ice overnight. In class the next morning, students had tools to help them melt the ice to "rescue" the animals inside. Pipettes with colored water that was warmer than the ice helped a bit. Students were also given bowls of salt and sugar to pinch and sprinkle on the ice to see which would melt the ice faster.

In Mrs. Hahn's class, two students guessed correctly that salt would help melt ice faster than sugar.

With pinches of salt and droplets from the pipettes, students worked together in small groups and celebrated excitedly when they were able to release the figurines from the ice blocks.
