LS Hour of Code 2017

Lower School News

Tens of millions of students across the world participated in computer science activities this month in support of the annual global event called the Hour of Code. This initiative raises awareness of programming and STEAM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) in hopes of piquing interest in programming and coding, helping students develop computer science skills, and showing the impact STEAM can have in their lives.
Students in the Lower School spent an hour or more daily learning and experimenting with programming in the Learning Lab and their classrooms during Hour of Code week. By spotlighting computer science and creating engaging experiences for students, Shorecrest faculty hope to inspire and empower students for success in their future STEAM endeavors.

Students had the opportunity demonstrate their skills for parents and families in the "Code with Your Kid" workshop hosted by the Shorecrest Tech Team. Families participated in coding activities alongside their child(ren). According to Katy Deegan, Lower School Educational Technologist, “Many parents were not sure how to do the activities, so they learned from their children what to do. The parents had as much fun as the kids! It was a great way for students to be the teachers."

The week's Hour of Code celebration also included a number of guest experts. Raffi Darrow, the Shorecrest Web Manager, spoke with fourth graders about coding concepts before they coded Google Doodles in the Learning Lab. They also learned to recognize the computers that are all around them every day – from alarm systems to dishwasher timers to microchips in puppies’ ears. Students in Mrs. Finnemore’s class took the lesson home to look for computers in their houses. Below is one fourth grader’s list of computers in his house, see how your home compares!
