Shorecrest School

What a Thrill It Is!

Head of School Letter

There is nothing new about the joy and thrill many adults gleam from being around young people. For many of us, that thrill never gets old.

The Shorecrest Class of 2016 has seven more months of school before their Commencement Ceremony. Big events will happen between now and then. However, on Class Competition Day this past week, they created a memory for their class and for our school that will live - for many of us - for decades. Admittedly, there is irony in the fact that a Spirit Week cheerleading routine performed by a dozen boys and then accompanied by the entire class could have such a powerful impact on the class and our school community. For many of us, the tradition of the boys doing cheerleading routines at half time of the Powder Puff Final, is one that would not be missed if it were dropped. Undoubtedly, many of the routines have moments of creativity, energy and joy. But most are filled with cliché’s and have a questionable value for the time and energy expended to pull them together.

Nonetheless, the Class of 2016 started this school year with a commitment to unite as a grade level and to try and do well in the Homecoming Competitions. They would be the first to admit that the previous three years have not been the best representations of the potential of the class. This year they put some energy into the Homecoming Spirit Week events and their involvement and leadership lifted the entire school up.

This link to the Class of 2016 full-length Cheerleading Routine will give you an insight into how our hard working and committed seniors can use their talent to have fun, and in doing so unite their class and our school.

"What happened for the class of 2016 yesterday through all of the class competitions is the class united in a very special way that created a powerful bond among them," agrees senior mom (and Assistant Head of School) Adrianne Finley O'Dell.

I love the energy, humor and good spirit shown by our Shorecrest students. It is a thrill to see them work, play and laugh together. I am sure I am not alone when I note that it is a privilege to be able to be around our students and their teachers.

We do not come to work. We come to our calling and it is a thrill.
