100th Day of JK, Kindergarten and First Grade

Experiential School News

It was the 100th day of school, and the Junior Kindergartners celebrated in style by creating hats and a snack of one hundred. It took patience and perseverance to make ten different paper strips of ten - ten sticker eyes, ten foam stickers, ten holes punched, ten shapes stamped, ten fringes snipped, ten sticker dots, ten dotted circles, ten styrofoam pieces stuck on, ten picture stickers and ten XXXXs! The ten strips were stapled to a headband proclaiming the 100th day, and the hats were worn proudly as evidence of counting skill and the knowledge that ten tens equals 100!

The snack of 100 also required counting 10 groups of ten (popcorn, colored cereal loops, marshmallows, pretzels, chocolate chips, Chex, raisins, M&M's, Cheerios, and raisins). Students discovered that 100 of anything is a lot to count AND to eat, and many took home a portion of what was declared to be "the very best snack" for later enjoyment!

Just as exciting were the efforts of the students to create towers of 100 plastic cups. Some children worked in groups and others on their own as they experimented with building long, short, and tall towers. And there was great laughter as the girls and boys created and engineered, balanced and built some pretty amazing structures.

Leading up to the 100th day of school, kindergartners were asked to bring in a collection of 100 of the same item. Some resulting projects were edible, while others contained LEGO figures or household objects - like toothpicks. Projects were on display to share with others. Students had time to rotate classrooms for different activities on the special day. There was a number recognition challenge with a hidden picture, a guest story reader, a special snack counting 10 of 10 favorite munchies and much more. Kindergartners were also challenged to record in writing and with a drawing something special they did that day.

Hip Hip Hooray! First graders also celebrated the 100th day! The first grade students had a great time moving from classroom to classroom and engaging in activities that all centered around the number 100. They had the opportunity to build with 100 blocks, create designs with 100 pattern blocks, do 100 physical activities and work with base 10 blocks to make combinations that added up to 100. Some even had their faces painted with a big, green 100!

The students were asked to think back to some of their favorite times during the first 100 days of the school year and many recounted dissections, reading "Charlotte's Web" and writing.
