Ybor City Field Experience

Lower School News

Fourth grade students are studying immigration in social studies. Luckily, Ybor City is nearby, and the area makes the perfect case study for most of the factors that contribute to immigration. Students were split into three field trip groups and focused on different aspects of this amazing city that literally put Tampa on the map.

First, they went on a walking tour of the city and traveled down 7th Avenue, which was and still is the main street of the town. They saw the Colombia Restaurant, The Italian Club, The Spanish Club, the port area where immigrants arrived, the first hotel and the Cuban Club. Students also watched present day Cuban immigrants roll cigars just as they would have 100 years ago.

Next, students visited the Ybor City Museum and learned a lot of history about the founding of this city. Finally, students were able to visit the little houses (casitas) where the workers lived.

Student groups will present what they learned about their topic.
