Mrs. Hahn’s Junior Kindergarten students have been following the progress of a caterpillar that formed a chrysalis on her porch.
“While I was reading a story [over Zoom] to the kids during distance learning, I noticed that a monarch caterpillar had formed a J-shape and was starting to make a chrysalis on my porch. I showed the kids and sent follow up photos once the chrysalis was formed.” she explained.
When a monarch butterfly emerged from the chrysalis, Mrs. Hahn recorded its first flight as a surprise for her students.
She set the stage for learning by sharing a related story, “Evelyn the Adventurous Entomologist: The True Story of a World-Traveling Bug Hunter” by Christine Evans. Then guest expert Mrs. Parrot from seventh grade science shared love of insects and her butterfly collection over Zoom with the children.
After witnessing much of a monarch butterfly’s life cycle right on Mrs. Hahn's porch, she showed them the video of the butterfly release. She also promised to leave the milkweed plants on her porch so the butterfly can continue to come back for nectar anytime. Then she read “Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly” by Alan Madison to the young Chargers.
