Shorecrest fifth grade math teacher, Mrs. Howell, and her kindergartener, Emma, spent a recent weekend sewing face masks for doctors and nurses at St. Anthony’s hospital. Emma also made a few masks with her own decorative fabrics.
“A fellow Gator grad and St. Anthony’s doctor procured the material and we used the UF prototype that is 4% more effective than an N95. We’ll be working a little more each day!” Mrs. Howell eagerly shared.

Mrs. Howell then worked the geometry of mask making into her fifth grade math curriculum. She gave the students the measurements for each piece of the mask and had them determine the most efficient way to make masks from 48"x48” fabric. Students uploaded videos revealing how many masks they thought could be made and showed graphs and arithmetic of how they arrived at their answers.
This was a great reminder to the Chargers that MATH is EVERYWHERE!
