Theater for Young Audiences

Experiential School News

“The sun'll come out tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow
There'll be sun.”

It’s not news to anyone that Theater has and will always have a special place in my heart. As a Theater-Mom of a young human being who fell in love with Theater in Middle School, I will always be enthusiastic about productions small and large because this is indeed a very special way to tell stories.

What is the impact of Theater for Young Audiences on a child?

There is enough research out there to show that seeing live theater offers a range of academic, social, and emotional benefits to children. Theater gives children chances to increase their ability to accept people with different opinions from their own and to embrace the diversity of ways other people live and the experiences they have. Theater and the stories that are told on stage can become mirrors or windows, where children see themselves and others. Often, theatre becomes a sliding door, allowing children to step into this new world and find their voice.

The New Victory Theater, a flagship theater for family audiences in New York City, conducted a research and concluded that:
  • Children exposed to live theater are much more able to imagine the lives of others.
  • Children exposed to live theater before the age of eight report that “Theater is for someone like me.”
  • Children demonstrate a range of intrinsic impacts after seeing live theater performance, including personal relevance, social bridging, aesthetic growth, and motivation to action.
I really think you should not miss the opportunity to take your kids to see "Annie Jr." this weekend!

The Middle School students have been working really hard and will love to see us all there!
