Veterans Day

Head of School Letter

Today our nation celebrates Veterans Day. Founded to commemorate the end of the First World War in 1918, it was originally known as Armistice Day. The name was later changed to Veterans Day to honor all American Veterans.  In many places, bells will toll at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month across the country, in memory of the brave men and women who have sustained our nation and liberty in times of war and peace.

At Shorecrest we recognize Veterans Day in a number of ways. At the Lower School Town Meeting, Mrs. Ford’s class taught the community about the history and meaning of Veterans Day, as we pay our respects to those who have served our country. As always, part of the Lower School Town Meeting includes the community recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Later in the morning the Upper School Red, White and Blue Club sponsored the Veterans Day commemoration ceremony. The Red, White and Blue club supports first responders, military retired and deployed, wounded warriors, and honor flight recipients. As part of its work, this student club also organizes the annual Veterans Day ceremony.

The ceremony includes the student club president leading the community in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. We are lucky to have as our guest speaker Shorecrest parent and military officer Lt. Col. Elizabeth Eaton-Ferenzi. Her work as a helicopter pilot deployed to the Middle East provides a valuable perspective and context for her to speak about the meaning of Veterans Day.

Veterans Day provides an important moment for all Americans to honor those individuals who have protected and defended this country. Please take time to express appreciation to those who have served this country.

All the best,
Nancy
