Bird Inquiry Work in JK
The Director of Shorecrest's Peck Center for Medical Sciences, Mrs. Lisa Peck, visited Dr. Quraishi and Mrs. Beggins' Junior Kindergarten classroom as a guest expert to enrich Experiential School student inquiry about birds.
For weeks the students have been designing and building bird nests and birdhouses, and engaging in the engineering process of designing a prototype, testing it, and adjusting it as needed. They also took a mini-hike to Shorecrest's Native Classroom to see bird nests in their natural context.
To deepen this learning Mrs. Peck shared all about birds, including how feather barbules work like Velcro, how different beak shapes help pick up different types of food, and how the airfoil shape of birds' wings pushes air in a way that allows them to fly. Children even created airfoil "wings" out of paper and string, and practiced moving the paper without touching it.
The young Chargers were very excited to gain this real-world knowledge and experience and to apply it to their ongoing learning.
