Head of School Letter: Field of Dreams - Coming Together in Celebration
We are joyously looking forward to tonight’s ribbon cutting on Haskell Field to celebrate the completion of the Centennial Stadium Project. This stadium, with its new turf field and dazzling lightning bolt at the 50-yard line, will serve as an anchor to the campus and as a backdrop for many community events. It speaks to our Mission of supporting physical well-being through PE and athletics; and also provides opportunities to showcase Shorecrest’s impressive facilities.
Daily PE classes have already started taking place on the turf field and it is the home field for many of our Shorecrest athletic programs, including football, flag football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls lacrosse and track & field. In addition to the beautiful, state-of-the-art, multi-sport turf field, this project also includes a new rubberized 8-lane track, a huge new digital display scoreboard and brand new LED stadium lights. This gorgeous facility will also serve as the backdrop for special events, such as Homecoming Court, Special Olympics, Senior Night recognitions, JK on the Run, and who knows how many other events yet to be discovered!
Athletics are an integral part of the educational program at Shorecrest. Physical education is part of the daily life of our students. The objectives of our PE and athletic programs are to provide opportunity for physical, emotional and social development, and to reinforce our Mission of promoting physical well-being. Our PE and Athletics programs provide meaningful experiences for students through physical activity, teamwork and healthy competition. Nearly 70% of our Upper School students participate in Chargers Athletics and interscholastic competition provides ample opportunities for many Middle Schoolers to be involved in sports.
This year we're excited to offer three new athletic programs, facilitated by our enhanced field space. This fall we debuted girls flag football, competing in a newly-created mini-league of Shorecrest, Berkeley Prep, Tampa Prep and the Academy of the Holy Names. The team is off to a great start, enjoying the competition and looking forward to hosting playoffs at the end of the season on Haskell Field. After a year of club play, Shorecrest will launch our interscholastic boys and girls lacrosse programs this spring. Lacrosse is a growing sport in this area and there is so much excitement among our players and coaches. We are delighted to be able to provide these new opportunities for Shorecrest athletes, whether students have the chance to learn a new sport or pursue their existing passion while representing the Chargers.
And to keep you informed about all of our athletic teams, Shorecrest is pleased to announce the launch of two new athletic-focused social media accounts! Subscribe or follow @ShorecrestSport on Facebook and Instagram to learn about upcoming games, see highlights and scores of competitions, and get to know Shorecrest student-athletes and coaches. We are so excited to provide sports content and support our teams through these official Chargers Athletics accounts.
I hope to see many of you at tonight’s festivities. Go Chargers!
All the best,
Nancy
