Head of School Letter: Thanksgiving 2024

This year as we head towards the Thanksgiving holiday, more than ever there is a sense of gratefulness and gratitude that permeates the Shorecrest community. Having lived through loss, and all of us have experienced disruption this past fall, it creates an opportunity for reflection and appreciation for what we do have. At the core of this school community, the impulse to reach out and help one another is what binds us to each other and creates the unique strength of Shorecrest. 

The experience of material loss can range from inconvenient to devastating. Coping with this kind of loss takes a variety of forms and can also impact one’s perspective. Many in our community have shared how difficult it was to ask for help—but also how profoundly they were impacted by the kindness, generosity, and care that poured out from the School and from other Shorecrest families. That support has not only helped them through tough times but has also deepened their bond to this community and reinforced the personal connections that they value so much. 

Likewise, other families have reflected on how meaningful it is to give back to this community, by offering support to fellow Chargers during times of need. In addition to providing for  material needs: housing, clothes, furniture, beds, toys, school supplies, there have been countless examples of Shorecrest folks showing up in-person to bring meals, provide childcare, do laundry, help with yard clean-up and debris removal. Through both giving and receiving, there has been an overwhelming spirit of gratitude and appreciation.

I am proud of our school and I know that this spirit won't end after homes and belongings are replaced. The support that we have seen will only continue here at Shorecrest because, in essence, that is who we are. I encourage all of you to keep an eye out for opportunities that can continue to strengthen our sense of community throughout the year.

Thanksgiving gives all of us time to pause for reflection and deeply contemplate what we most appreciate in our lives today. Certainly for me it is being with my family and friends and being a part of Shorecrest. As we celebrate the holiday next week, please know that our community is stronger than ever and your presence is part of what makes Shorecrest so wonderful and unique.
