In kindergarten this week, Mrs. Minke's students were introduced to a mini Makerspace Center as part of their classroom art center. It is stocked with styrofoam trays, colored tape, plastic bottle lids, Sharpie pens, Tacky Glue and paper. It is a smaller version of the Makerspace in our Media Center.
The purpose of a place for children to "make" is to stimulate creativity and encourage the students to think from a new perspective. In rotating groups of four, students approach the makerspace to work on their ideas and projects.
The kindergarten classroom art area has also been restructured to include shelf space for each child to display his or her work. Once the first rotation is complete, the kindergarten teachers photograph the finished projects to record the students' work over time. The models will go home, different supplies will be added to the choices, and everyone will be invited for a second turn in the Makerspace Center. Kindergartners are eager to explore the Makerspace in the Media Center, as well.
