Environmental Science Conversations in JK

Kindergarten

Upper School honors environmental science students visited JK classes this week. They wrote and hand-illustrated books about the environment in the style of Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax." The teens read their books to the preschoolers and discussed ways to be kinder to the planet.

That same week, kindergarteners learned all about drinking water - where it comes from and how hard it can be for some people to obtain. They wrote facts about drinking water from around the world and drew flyers reminding students to save their water bottles. They excitedly presented the information to JK classes and answered questions about water conservation and water bottles. They also recommended books JK classes could read to learn more.

Engaging students as experts - even when presenting to younger students - allows them to expand their presentation skills, use active listening and empathy skills, and accommodates a diverse variety of learning styles. Students often express an increased sense of achievement after presenting information they have learned vs taking a written assessment. Presentations to different grade levels also build community on Shorecrest's PK3 - grade 12 campus.
