Great Start for Charger Sailors!
September 25, 2014
Patrick S. and Nic B. won their respective fleets to become District Champions last weekend in Charleston, SC. They move on to represent the SAISA district at the Cressy national championship regatta to be held in Bellingham, WA, in early November.
(High school sailing is divided into three disciplines: singlehanded, doublehanded, and team racing, each having a district championship regatta that also serves as a qualifier for that discipline’s national championship.)
Forty-two sailors competed in the District Championships from all over the southeast United States and the US Virgin Islands. The fleets were split by the size of sail the boat had: full rig or radial. Patrick S. dominated the Full Rig fleet by winning 7 of the 18 races and finishing 11 points ahead of the second place boat. Nic B. won an epic battle between the top two Radials by winning 9 of the 18 races and edging out the second place boat by 2 points.
The location and weather demanded the most from the competitors. The sailing venue was at the convergence of two rivers requiring an understanding of tide and current not normally encountered by most competitors. Saturday was windy with sustained winds from 15-18 knots and gusts to 20 knots. Sunday presented an entirely different sailing experience with lighter winds and much more current. Shorecrest was the strongest overall team, with Pat and Nic winning, Hannah S. finishing 5th and Kyle D. finishing 13th. Go Chargers!
Looking ahead:
The doublehanded season gets started this Saturday with Shorecrest sending both a varsity and a JV team to compete against 29 other teams at the South Points #1 regatta at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa.
