ES Holiday Concert [Video, photos]

Arts

The Alpha and Junior Kindergarten classes of The Experiential School of Tampa Bay came together on stage to perform for family and friends. Their annual winter concert features new and traditional holiday songs, each with a lesson in musicality. Scroll down for a video and photos from the performance.

CELEBRATE WITH JOY
The children learned to sing a syncopated melody, that is, to sing on the offbeat, rather than the downbeat. This is a difficult skill!

HAPPY HANUKKAH!
The emphasis here was on pauses in music, known as rests.

HERE WE COME A-CAROLING
For what may be the first time ever, students are singing in compound time. They switch between simple triple (a rolling or rocking style), to compound duple (straight, even style). It's tricky!

I HAVE A LITTLE DREIDEL
In this song, students actively used audiation. Simply put, audiation is "to think music." When you hum or whistle a melody, that is audiation!

SNOW IS FALLING TODAY
A song just for fun, because every concert should have one.

LA NAVIDAD
Spanish is integrated into our curriculum in The Experiential School, and music class is no exception. La Navidad was sung in Spanish and English.

HANUKKAH HANUKKAH
Students experience and understand the role of the conductor in this song. They had to watch the conductor carefully in the middle of the song in order to perform the correct movements.

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS
A holiday show may feel incomplete without this Christmas Classic.

GO IN PEACE
Students sang in a light, or gentle voice, rather than the heavier voice they had been using for the rest of the concert.
