Shorecrest sophomores in Joe González's World Literature English class read and perform scenes from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Students become familiar with Shakespeare's story of star-crossed lovers by focusing on language, first by memorizing the prologue to the play, and then, in the culminating project, memorizing, blocking, and performing a scene with two weeks of preparation time. By acting as Romeo and Juliet, students begin to appreciate how Shakespeare's language conveys complex emotions.
At the end of the unit the English classroom became a miniature theater, where the play leapt from the page to the stage and students proudly and confidently showed off their hard work.
