Shorecrest Wins Award at VEX Robotics CREATE US Open Championship

Shorecrest VEX Robotics Team 6104G, Tempest, composed of members Gaston Grehan-Savona ‘26, Patrick Meng ‘25 and Kiera Nguyen-Lin ‘28, competed in the CREATE US Open Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa, from March 27-29, 2025. The team won the judged THINK Award from more than 140 teams.

The THINK Award recognizes "the most effective and consistent use of coding techniques and programming design solutions to solve the game challenge.” The team was also recognized for their effective communication skills, teamwork and professionalism along with their Engineering Notebook that documents the extensive process they have used to design, build and program their robot, affectionately known as Jett.

The team has competed in seven competitions this season. Additional accomplishments include:

  • Design Awards (2) - recognizes an organized and professional approach to the Engineering Design Process, project and time management, and team organization.
  • Innovate Awards (2) - recognizes an effective and well documented design process for a novel aspect of the team’s robot design or gameplay strategy.
  • Florida State Tournament Champion

And they are not finished yet! Team Tempest is already preparing for the World Championship in Dallas, TX, in early May.
