Physician-Scientist Visits Shorecrest Medical Science Students

Upper School News

On Thursday, April 3, Dr. Marco Davila spoke to Shorecrest Upper School students who are part of the Pre-Med Club and those in Mrs. Peck’s Honors Intro to Medical Sciences and Honors Anatomy classes. Davila, an MD-PhD, works as a CAR T-cell therapy researcher, and he is creating genetically altered T-cells which attack a patient's blood cancer cells, putting them in permanent remission and essentially curing certain blood cancers.

Dr. Davila, a Shorecrest parent, studied at Duke University School of Medicine earning both an MD and PhD in immunology. He completed his residency at Weill Cornell Medical College, allowing him to research how to broaden the reach of cell therapy to other cancers. Through this presentation students were given the opportunity to learn about the exciting advancements in the realm of cancer treatment. Dr. Davila also shared some of his personal experiences in the medical field, explaining the challenges he has faced as well as his inspiring success, while offering the students advice as they try to discover their future after Shorecrest.

Thank you for visiting and sharing your expertise with the Chargers, Dr. Davila!
