Discovering Pollinators on Campus

Lower School News Middle School News

Second graders teamed up with eighth graders to investigate native plants and pollinators in Shorecrest's outdoor Native Classroom.

Second graders spent the semester learning about plants and pollinators, specifically those native to Florida. With an eighth grade buddy they completed a "Flowers, Seeds and Leaves" scavenger hunt. In pairs they located pollinator plants while learning about the butterflies they host. The eighth graders were perfect mentors after their time spent in Middle School with Bay Grasses in Classes and other ecological units completed in the Native Classroom beyond the track.

Their hunted included clues like:

  • Has a cone & makes arrowroot flour
  • Produces fragrant white flowers year-round that produce red berry-like fruit
  • Find a flowering plant toxic to cows, pale purple almost white flowers w/ purple berries

They reflected on the importance of removing invasive plant species from the campus in order to make room for native plants that will help the coastline, overall ecology and pollinators alike. They also discussed the harm trash left behind by humans can have on animals living in and around our watersheds.
