Shorecrest School

Time…

Head of School Letter

“How did it get so late so soon?”

Dr. Seuss

Can it really be May 1st already? This is so cliché, but, where has this year gone? It is now the beginning of the final month of the 2014-2015 school year and the month that brings year-end celebrations, awards ceremonies, final exams, Baccalaureate and Graduation. It is filled with the stress of all that needs to be done to wrap up the year and then relief at reaching the end of it. It is a month that our students look forward to all year as they anticipate their summer plans. It is a month our seniors have been dreaming of as they finish up their studies at Shorecrest and begin to make the transition to college. It is a time of reflection of our progress, a time to appreciate those who helped us make that progress, and a time to look ahead as we set new goals for ourselves.

One of the most popular graduation songs of all time was sung by our vocal ensemble at graduation last year, Seasons of Love from Rent. You may be more familiar with the lyrics than the title of the song:
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty five thousand moments, oh dear
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

How DO you measure a year? The musical Rent offers suggestions. I challenge you to ponder how you want to measure it, and to encourage your children to reflect on their year at Shorecrest and to set their intentions for next year… not just for their academics, but for their activities, their relationships with friends and teachers, and for their service to the community.

One thing about time… it is very democratic. We all have the same number of hours in every day, although if you are like me, you wish you could multiply those hours to accomplish more.  The beauty of time IS that it is democratic. It is our most precious resource and it is how we choose to spend that time that defines who we are. As Gandalf once said,
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Enjoy this special month!  I hope to see you around campus at one of our year-end activities—and perhaps you can share with me your own thoughts about time.
