Brian S Receives Mathew F Little CCBPI Award

Shorecrest and Critical Intervention Services (CIS) maintain a school-wide comprehensive safety, security and protection program that retains the open and welcoming atmosphere of our independent school campus while enhancing all levels of safety for the Shorecrest community. CIS Officers have become an endeared part of the Shorecrest community, participating in celebrations, volunteering at events, and getting to know those who are on campus frequently.

CIS's methodology is based on the belief that strong social networks strengthen communities, by creating an environment where positive influences are nurtured and negative ones are left without hope of success. This is accomplished through “connectors” who take ownership and responsibility for their community as a whole. CIS officers do this in schools and neighbourhoods daily, and CIS wanted to recognize that Shorecrest is home to a multitude of these connectors, both student and faculty.

This week, CIS introduced the Mathew F Little CCBPI Award at Shorecrest. CCBPI stands for Community & Character Based Protection Initiative, and it is the first award of its kind - presented to a graduating senior who embodies the values of CIS and Shorecrest. It is also the first time CIS has awarded a student.

In 2011, CIS lost officer Mathew Little while in the line of duty, after he was shot while patrolling a large apartment complex where police sirens aren't uncommon. Engaged and only 26 years old, Mathew was smart, well liked, and great at his job. He was the first officer to die in the line of duty in the then-19-year history of Critical Intervention Services.

“This year's senior class represents some of the most intelligent, caring, and civic-minded individuals I've ever seen. However, one of those individuals stands out among the rest when it comes to being a truly outstanding member of the Shorecrest community. Please join me in congratulating Brian S. in being the newest recipient of the Mathew F Little CCBPI Award.” Chief Hector Rodriguez said at an Upper School assembly this week.

“On a daily basis, Brian can be seen leading the wrestling team, volunteering at the St. Petersburg Food Bank, organizing after school activities, assisting with theater productions, and of course, engaging in a friendly discussion about military history and tactics in the hallways. None of this stops him from being a friend to everyone and consistently involving himself with several different groups of people. All of this of course is conducted with a smile on his face and a friendly hello as he passes you on campus. Brian seeks only to better himself, his fellow students, and the community as a whole.

When discussing the possibility of presenting an award, this student was consistently suggested by faculty members as a leader amongst his peers and a helping hand to anyone in need. This award is in recognition for his commitment to the betterment of the Shorecrest community and to his continued success as a positive 'connector' in whatever future community he chooses to serve.”
