Junior at J24 World Championship Regatta

Athletics

Junior Josh D. was selected to compete in the J24 World Championship regatta, held in Newport, RI, Sept. 20-26. In the photos, Josh D is on the boat with sail number USA2573 and bow number 73.

U.S. Sailing  selects only one youth under 25 entry to represent USA against the top J24 sailors from countries around the world. Josh and five other top keel boat sailors were selected for the team. He was the sail trimmer. Most of the experienced youth J24 sailors are from Florida, except the team’s tactician is a Yale graduate who lives in San Francisco, CA. The team has been training for past six months for this event. [Meet the team here or follow them on Facebook here.]

At the Regatta, as a member of the only US team under age 25 amongst 70 boats of adult sailors, Josh sailed 10 races over 5 days in a variety of conditions including high winds with large ocean swell. After a promising first 2 days, the team was not able to compete at all on day 3 due to a broken boom at the beginning of the day. The team replaced the boom and then competed the remaining days - ending the regatta in 53rd place overall.

During the race and over the 6 months they prepared for the event, the team learned many skills and a lot about overcoming adversity.
