Cardinal Mooney 64: Chargers 62 in Overtime
Our season came to an abrupt end on Thursday night, losing 64-62 in Overtime to Cardinal Mooney in Sarasota. The “back story” to the game. We ended their season last year at home in the regional semi-finals. They were returning all starters including Ryan M, who basketball powerhouse. (Louisville offered him a scholarship after the game.) Our game night UCF and Louisville were both in the house along with a whole lot of energy from their fans. I give this backdrop only to note the gym was standing room only for Mooney.
Mooney was having a good year 23-3 and they expected to win. The first half was back and forth, neither team gaining a big lead. We held Ryan to 10 points and led 30-28. We had knocked down 7-3’s coming from 5 different players (Brady-2, Kent-2, Tyee-1, Colin-1 and Aundre-1) Brady and Marcus had not really heated up yet, so we were feeling pretty good of how the game was going.
The start of the 2nd half we scored the first 10 of 14 points and went up by 10. We were playing poised and containing their scorer. Then in the span of about 2 minutes, we were called for 4 fouls. Two were while Ryan was shooting 3’s and he flopped, but we persevered and still were up 46-39 after 3 quarters. The game was turning into a ½ court affair - them getting clock stoppage with foul calls and us not getting our running or pressing game going as they crept back in it. In the span of 90 seconds, Kent K went down with what looked like a serious knee injury (possible torn MCL) and went out and then Ryan came down on top of Marcus (of course our foul) and he went out with knee sprain.
With 1:30 on the clock, Tyee fouled out and Ryan continued to march to the line, ending up with 15-16 on FT’s in the 2nd half alone to move them up by 4 late in the game. No quit in our team, we still manage to tie the game late on a big 3 by Aundre and force OT. Marcus tried to gut it out in OT hobbling on 1- leg scoring on a put back late, down 2 with 4.8 seconds left Brady went coast to coast and what looked like a foul missed a lay-up and the game and season was over. They ended up shooting 33- FT’s in the 2nd half on 17 Shorecrest fouls-to our 4. Brady was held to 12 points and Marcus was held to 6 (averaging 18 and 16 on the season and 10 FT’s per game.)
On the night Tyee had 17 points, Brady had 12, Aundre, Kent and Kenny each had 8. Marcus was held to 6 points, but had 13 rebounds and 5 asssits. The team did get a nice story on game day from one of the Tribune reporters who became enamored with our team this year.
