Upper School faculty member Jim Henderson experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity last week when he broadcasted the NCAA Division II men’s national collegiate championship basketball tournament for Florida Southern College.

Henderson, who has been the Mocs’ men’s and women’s play-by-play basketball announcer for the past decade, called all three national tournament games on fscmocs.com, including the 77-62 national championship game win over the Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. last Saturday.

The victory gave Florida Southern a 36-1 record for the 2014-15 season, and earned the Mocs their first national men’s basketball championship in 34 years. Henderson called the week long event a "surreal experience".

“To watch a group of outstanding young men achieve a goal that most student-athletes can only dream about was a phenomenal experience. Their perseverance, resilience and camaraderie, not only in the national tournament but throughout the season, led to their rightfully being called national champions. They were champions in the truest sense of the word, both on and off the floor.”

Henderson said he is “extremely grateful to Florida Southern for including me in their travel party, and to Upper School Head Tom Dillow and Dean of Faculty Richard Beaton for giving me this opportunity and providing coverage in my absence.

“It is an experience I will never forget.”
