Chargers Sailing at SAISA South-points

Athletics

On Saturday, February 20, the Shorecrest Varsity Sailing Chargers traveled to Miami for the first event in the limited SAISA South-points Series hosted by Ransom Everglades High School. The Chargers finished 1st overall out of 18 schools from Florida and the US Virgin Islands! Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the season this year was limited to 4 qualifying events. The top three finishes by each team in the series determined qualification for Districts.

Early in the day Guthrie Braun ‘22 and Thomas Cura ‘21 helped establish a lead with a 1st and a 2nd in the first A rotation, followed by Ethan Danielson ‘22 and Andrew Tang ‘22 starting strong in the first B rotation with a 3 and a 5.

As racing heated up between the top teams throughout the day, the Chargers slipped into second place and it all came down to the last race. Guthrie Braun ‘22 and Thomas Cura ‘21 won the last race, putting 3 additional points between them and 2nd place to take the title.

After a long day of competing Ethan Danielson ‘22,  Andrew Tang ‘22 and Heidi Hicks ‘21 stayed behind to defend the Chargers in two protest hearings that challenged the results, but in the end the Chargers successfully defended their win.

The top 7 teams overall at the end of the series are given a berth to compete at the SAISA District Championships, where 15 of the tops schools from Florida (except the panhandle), Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Northern Alabama and islands in the Caribbean compete for 3 berths to the National Championship in the summer. This year there will be no National Championship, unfortunately.
