Shorecrest hosted the track and field District 11 meet on Thursday, April 21. Twelve teams competed for a district title in the most competitive district in the state by far. After the day-long district competition, the Chargers boys ended the day taking home a hard fought 2nd place, district runner up trophy. After being the district runner-up last year, the girls came back to win the title in the end.
The day started off well on the field with Mikhail Whyte '22 defeating the favorite long jumper from St. Pete Catholic with a jump of 6.67 meters to defend his district title from last year. In the process he also set the school record for the long jump. Shortly following that, Emerson Schreiner '23 was able to vault to a personal best of 2.85 meters winning the district title for pole vault. The final district title for field events came in the girls Javelin. Our defending state champion, Sonoma Kasica '24, put up a strong mark of 37.36 meters, which would have won state last year, on her way to defending her district title.
Other strong performances on the field included Luke Bernstein '22 2nd & 3rd in the triple and long jumps, Micheal Canizares '22 2nd in pole vault, Jeremy Barton '23, 2nd in the javelin, David Zbrozhek '22 3rd in the javelin, Meredith Malison '23 4th in pole vault after not competing in that event in almost a year, Indiana W. '27 4th in long jump as a seventh grader, Ashli McKenny '22 4th in high jump, and James Floto '23 4th in high jump.
The 4x800 relays also took place during the field events. Both the girls and boys relays put together great races with 2nd place (girls) and 4th (boys) and will advance to the Regional meet.

The running events started at 2pm. Théo Simon '22 earned the first district title on the track running a 15.72, cruising for a district title in the 110 m high hurdles. The next District title came in the boys 100 m dash. Julian Hairston '22 pushed ahead of the field at the 50 m mark out of lane one to win the 100 meter district title in a time of 11.42 into a -2.2 head wind. The 100 meter dash was followed by the 1600 meter mile run. Mylie McDonough '23 was able to push ahead of the pack with one lap to go, followed closely by Alex E '26. Sabina S. '26 came on late, passing a number of runners in the final lap.
In one of the most dramatic finishes of the day, Shorecrest was able to sweep the top three spots of the mile with the district title going to Mylie McDonough '23 in a time of 5:46.28. The final district title of the day came in the 300 meter hurdles. Théo Simon '22 returned to the track to defend his 300 meter hurdles district title from the year before. Out of the gate Théo put pressure on his competitors by coming out fast. This served him well as he again dominated the field, cruising to another district title. Other great individual performances included Kaja Dionne '24 2nd in 400m dash and 3rd in the 200m dash, Alex E. '26 2nd in the 1600 mile run, Nikki Ayers '22 3rd in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, James Floto '23 3rd in the 100 meter dash, and Taylor Brown '25 4th in the 100 meter hurdles. Both 4x100 meter teams were also able to advance in 2th place including a school record for the boys with a time of 43.64.
What a great day for Shorecrest track and field. Go Chargers!
