Little Ones Learn from Great Outdoors, Middle School Leaders

Experiential School News

One of the benefits of being a pre k through 12th grade school is that Shorecrest students have the opportunity to learn from, lead with and look up to one another. For example, this fall eighth graders Ryan H, Meira K, Lliam C, and Matthew D volunteered to lead Mrs. Craver's junior kindergarten class on a nature walk along the 54th Ave North channel on the north side of campus.

As the group enjoyed the fall sunshine, the eighth graders taught their younger peers about the plants living there, noting the different shapes of the leaves of the longleaf pine, sea grape, saw palmetto and Australian pine, to name a few.

JK students collected samples of leaves to bring back to their classes to study, and even found some microtrash to clean up along the way. Lliam C dutifully collected and properly disposed of the trash that the junior kindergarten students found.

The path along the channel became an outdoor native classroom in early 2015, thanks to current ninth grader Walker W, who took on the massive clearing and planting project as his eighth grade personal project and Eagle Scout project.

Shorecrest is a college prep, pre k school, elementary school, middle school and high school in St. Petersburg, FL.
