In fourth grade, students read in "partnerships" or in "book clubs." This means that they read the same text as their peers. This is a book they have chosen to read based on their interests. They set goals with each other and then go off to a quiet spot to read. They come back together to have conversations about the plot, character, lessons learned, etc. This method holds each student accountable for reading, comprehending and discussing the books they read.
