MLK Day Honored in Lower School
February 06, 2015
To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy of service, the Lower School started a "pay it forward" initiative. Each class chose another at random for which they were meant to do a kind act. The experiences, sometimes planned, sometimes a surprise, were meaningful to both the givers and the receivers. They declared January the “Month of Service”!
Boarman’s Bolts’ selected Ms. Bowen’s JK class. The fourth graders brainstormed ideas on Edmodo, their social media website. Ideas ranged from teaching about Dr. King, to reading books together, to planting shade trees. The one that was selected was a student proposal to teach the younger students sculpting techniques so they could use clay effectively in their art and projects.
During Art class the day before, Mrs. Rowe refreshed their knowledge of sculpting methods and in Morning Meeting on Thursday, the fourth graders brainstormed additional pointers they could impart to the JK class. They arrived at The Experiental School to an enthusiastic group of young artists! The fourth grade students fanned out and worked one-on-one with the four year olds. The result was astounding! The creativity in the classroom was palpable. Soon a variety of shapes and figures emerged to become butterflies, leaves, alligators, and bagels. Older and younger students worked together without needing adult help. Time flew by as is always the case when experiential learning is at its best.
Ms. Deegan's second graders celebrated the 100th Day of School with Ms. Telemachos's fourth graders. They brought snacks and everyone worked together on challenging 100th Day problems. The students had a great time learning and celebrating together.
