Innovators in Second Grade

Lower School News

Recently Ilaria Belloni, Associate Director of the Ross Roeder Institute for Financial Literacy, Economics and Entrepreneurship (RRI), helped second graders learn about savings, interest, investments, innovation and entrepreneurship through a story. In the story, Mimi, a young girl determined to purchase a telescope using her own money, starts a lemonade stand and soon expands her business by adding apple juice and cookies. She learns about saving and earning interest by depositing her earnings in a bank account, ultimately investing in a rocket ship company. This engaging story led to several thoughtful discussions.

"Second grade is an ideal time to introduce children to the basics of innovation and entrepreneurship," said Ilaria. "In class, we emphasized the importance of thinking creatively and solving problems in both small and large ways. These discussions helped the children understand that innovation isn’t limited to major inventions or businesses, but is something that can be applied in everyday life—whether at home, in the classroom, or within the community."

“One of the goals of the lesson was to get students to start seeing themselves as innovators - as someone who can look at a problem in the world and think deeply and creatively about a solution. It was fun to watch them come up with kid-sized problems and solutions!” said Michele Johnson, Second Grade Teacher.

Some ideas included an automated mop, a complex water purification system and even a mobile puppy rescue service. "Their solutions were diverse and thoughtful, showcasing their ability to think critically and creatively," said Ilaria.

Students had the opportunity to learn from the entrepreneurial Curci family, who shared their innovative approach to sustainable farming. The Curcis own Fat Beet Farm, which includes a sustainable farm, cafe, bakery and more. They offer tours, yoga classes and educational field trips—an excellent example of how creativity and entrepreneurship can lead to a successful and impactful business.

“By nurturing the skills of innovation and entrepreneurship, we are helping to equip our students with the tools to become thoughtful problem-solvers,” shared Ilaria.
