Technology, Games Make Math Fun for First Graders

Lower School News

Shorecrest Preparatory School first graders are learning to LOVE math! They started off 2016 studying place value, greater than/less than, and the = sign. First grade teacher Mrs. Densa says, “When teaching greater than, less than we will be using the < and > sign. I teach them that this like an alligator mouth. And the open end will always face the larger number because alligators are always hungry!”

Next they’ve applied their new understanding of place-value to write number scrolls, which they’ll practice throughout the remainder of the school year. Mrs. Densa says, “We'll learn strategies for solving comparison number stories and use the comparison symbols to represent and solve number stories. We're playing several new math games, including Addition Top-it, the Digit Game, and Base-10 Exchange.”

Each Friday morning, the first grade classes have the opportunity to rotate through each classroom and engage in a math game. One of the math rotations includes the use of technology. The students use iPads to build upon skills they’ve learned in class. Some of their favorite apps include Teach Me, Coin Math and Crazy Clock.
