Mrs. Husenitza’s fourth graders recently completed their first writing unit of study - memoir writing. They started the school year with this topic to build community by learning more about each other.
The class first focused on using authors as mentors. They studied the memoirs of Patricia Polacco, Donald Crews, and Cythnia Rylant to see what they were like and what strategies they used. Students then wrote and typed their own memoirs.
Next, the Lower School Instructional Technologist, Ms. Deegan, gave students a lesson on how to make voice memos. She helped assign each student-created voice memo a QR code. Students pasted QR codes to their published pieces so audiences can hear them read their memoir.

The memoirs are hanging in the fourth grade hallway, just outside the classroom. Other classes also have writing hanging, including the story behind how they got their first name.
