100th Day of School Fun

Lower School News

Lower School found many fun ways to celebrate the 100th day of the 100th year of Shorecrest!

On February 7, kindergarteners buddied up with second graders to complete a lofty mission - read 100 books to celebrate the 100th day of school!

Paired up with a second grade reading buddy, kindergarten readers worked their way through their bin of “Just Right Books.” Second graders had the opportunity to share a favorite picture book with their younger buddies. Connecting to kindergarten’s current math work, pairs used ten frames to collect data and keep track of the number of books as they read them.

Cheers went up as the first ten books were read and recorded on a chart, and everyone gathered around when the final frame was placed to help reach the goal. Counting by tens, the goal of 100 was met and even exceeded! It was a beautiful way to come together as readers, and also to enjoy the Outdoor Classroom and Garden that second graders have cared for all year.

On the 100th day, first graders rotated through stations in the first grade classrooms and made necklaces with 100 beads, built sculpture with 100 blocks/LEGO bricks, created gumball machine art with 100 dots, and solved an interactive, escape-room-style, digital activity with puzzles and challenges.

The young Chargers also took time to reflect and write about what they had learned in the past 100 days.
