Shorecrest School

Clinic byte: Back in school

Health & Guidance

It seems like just yesterday we were wishing Happy Summer and now school is back in session. We had a great first day of school on Wednesday and I wish everyone a great school year. If you are new to Shorecrest, my name is Marie Confident and I am the school nurse working in the clinic Tuesday-Friday for the past 10 years. I would like to introduce Gabby Steiner, RN. Nurse Steiner is new to our Shorecrest community and will be working in the clinic on Mondays and when I am not here. If you are near the clinic, please stop by to say hi.

One important part of my job is to make sure that Shorecrest is in compliance with the compulsory school immunization law. Students are required to have current immunization or exemption forms on file by the first day of school. If you have not sent in your child’s physical and immunization forms yet, please do so now.

If your child is new to Shorecrest and has a severe allergy requiring an EpiPen, please bring the EpiPen to the clinic ASAP. All medications must be in the original container with theprescription label attached.

Parents must sign consent forms for all medications except for over the counter medications that the clinic has available, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Tums, Benadryl, hydrocortisone cream and clear eye drops. If you have not filled out your child’s required medical forms online, please do so as the form tells me whether or not the clinic has permission from you to administer the mentioned OTC medications.

I encourage you to make it a habit of having your child eat a healthy breakfast every morning. Try to avoid sugary cereals and drinks. A water bottle is a must, and students are welcome to refill theirs in the clinic.

Please write your child’s last name and first initial on their school uniforms, sweaters, lunch bags, water bottles, PE bags and other school items so they can be returned to you when your child loses or forgets them -- and trust me, it will happen.

I hope that everyone had a great first week and welcome back!

Until next time, remain healthy,

Marie Confident, RN, BSN
Shorecrest School Nurse
