Science Really Does Matter in Second Grade

Lower School News

During their study of the changes in properties of matter, the second graders were recently visited by their favorite guest expert, Upper School science teacher Lisa Peck. They had fun exploring some properties of water and hydrophobic substances. They played with magic sand trying to determine why the sand remained dry in water. Quite puzzling! In addition, they were able to use toothpicks to "drive" colored droplets of water on wax paper during the "Wild Wacky Water Wheel" activity which Lisa Peck created.

When all of the exploring was done, the second graders had learned about the polar nature of water (cohesion), the hydrophobic nature of wax, and how diffusion occurs in liquids. Lots of fun!
