Middle School Students Start their Creative Engines

Mural artists visited Shorecrest Middle School’s fifth and seventh grades with an art car on Monday. Mitzi Jo Gordon of Creative Pinellas, along with mural artists James Oleson and Derek Donnelly, drove onto campus with a vividly painted car from the Carmada fleet. They were here to share with students how Carmada, a festival of car art, ties together with the thriving fine arts scene in downtown St. Petersburg.

Mrs. Williams’ seventh grade art classes worked directly with Mr. Oleson and Mr. Donnelly to learn how to plan a mural for the Middle School Arts and Sciences Building.

Mrs. Scoby’s fifth grade tech classes visited the art car and heard more about how painting on a vehicle presents a 3D canvas with unique challenges for mural artists. They then worked with Ms. Gordon to design their own art car from a 2D planning sheet to a 3D template. (View her sample art car creation time-lapse video here.)

You can enjoy similar art with your children at Arts Alive this Saturday, September 26, in St. Petersburg, Florida, with free visits at many of our museums! Carmada will be featured outside the Dalí Museum. There will be artists painting cars, free family craft projects from the NOMADStudio art bus, live screenprinting of special edition CARMADA T-shirts designed by artist Sebastian Coolidge, music and food trucks to serve up great treats.
