Police Chief Castor Visits [Video]

Upper School News

Retired Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor spoke to Upper School students as the first Willis Leadership Lecture Series guest of 2015-2016. She was elected the first
female president of a police academy class and 26 years later, she became the first woman to lead the Tampa Police Department. Her impressive bio may be found here.
Her strength has been connecting Tampa PD with the surrounding community, and as such this was the focus of her talk.

Chief Castor was introduced by senior Kai G., and Kai had the following to say after the hour-long session. "I found it interesting that one of the first things that Chief Castor said was that the law enforcement field is one of the most harshly criticized professional fields." As a simple example, Chief Castor explained that contrary to the medical field, when a surgeon's patient dies on the table, that one doctor may be criticized, but not the surgical field as a whole. "Unlike when a police officer shoots someone, or when one police officer does something very wrong, that not only does just that one officer receive criticism, but every officer across the country is compared to that one incident and the entire law enforcement field is frowned upon. I thought that was the most interesting thing she said, because I had never thought of it that way before." Kai reflected.

Chief Castor also spoke about how her team has helped build up the local community and why they shy away from media. She left plenty of time to answer questions, and our Upper School students were eager to learn more about traffic violations and why this was the time Chief Castor chose to retire.

With permission, the Lecture was recorded and may be viewed here:
