The Brain: the Boss of Our Body

On Monday, Mrs. Lisa Peck, Director of the new Center for Medical Sciences in Shorecrest Upper School, visited first grade as the first guest expert in a study of the human body.

Mrs. Peck brought sheep brains to help students learn all about the very important organ that makes us who we are… our brain! They learned that the brain controls every other part of our body. Mrs. Peck dissected a brain, and it was amazing to be able to see and touch all the different parts of the brain!

While an adult’s brain weighs 3 pounds and is about the size of a cantaloupe, a sheep’s brain is about the size of an infant’s brain. A first grader’s brain weighs about 2 pounds. The brain grows the most during the first 10 years of life, so it is important to learn as much as we can in first grade to s-t-r-e-t-c-h your brain!
