World Down Syndrome Day Spanish Teach-In

Lower School News

March 21st was World Down Syndrome Day, and part of the fourth grade Spanish curriculum includes honoring this special date with a visit from Alec Allwood. Alec is an 18-year-old with Down Syndrome who wants to be a teacher, and on World Down Syndrome Day Sra Jaime-Allwood gives him an opportunity to co-teach in her classroom.

The day before Alec's visit, the class watched a video explaining Down Syndrome. The Day encourages raising awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our communities. The fourth graders then had the idea of creating welcome cards and posters for Alec and thought about Spanish games they could play with him. Students spent Spanish class working on projects with Alec, and learned that even though people with Down Syndrome may be different, they are still people with feelings, dreams and great personalities. The students proved they valued inclusivity and compassion. ¡BRAVO CUARTO GRADO!
