Shorecrest School

Alumni Spotlight: Justin Latus '86

Alumni

A solid foundation in writing, math and theater from Shorecrest is what has helped Justin Latus ‘86 become the person he is today.

“I use the math skills I learned from Ms. Patenaude and Mr. Field at Shorecrest on a daily basis,” says Justin. “My main hobby is community theater, and my love of being in plays started at Shorecrest.”

Justin earned his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and his master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University.

He’s lived in Washington, D.C. since then, and is currently working at the Congressional Budget Office. “My portfolio,” Justin explains, “includes programs that serve low-income individuals, namely Supplemental Security Income and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.”

Although Justin does not have children of his own, he has hosted exchange students for their junior year of high school in the U.S. from the Czech Republic, Spain, Taiwan, Italy, Hungary, Thailand and France. He has also been a foster parent.

“Shorecrest not only helped me with writing and math, but also helped me develop the social skills that I need out in the world,” shared Justin.

During the pandemic, Justin’s job was remote, so he worked from the Seminole house where he grew up. Justin explains, “It was a wonderful time to reconnect with Shorecrest classmates. I find that as I get older, I am more connected to Shorecrest friends. I think we miss each other more and fondly remember our friendships and good times.”
