Black Authors Read-In, Feb. 14

Upper School News

The 2025 Black Authors Read-In will be happening at Shorecrest on Friday, February 14, 8:45am-3:30pm in the Weiss Family Pavilion.

All members of the Shorecrest community are invited to celebrate the literary achievements of Black authors by listening to and participating in the 2025 4th Annual Black Authors Read-In. The event, an open mic reading, will span the entire school day, breaking only during the Upper School lunch period.

While many significant writers of the past, such as Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison, Claude McKay, Gwendolyn Brooks, and James Baldwin will be remembered, readings of contemporary and lesser-known literary artists (including our own talented Chargers) will be shared as well. Bring your favorite works to share, and some readings will be provided. All genres are welcome. Material should be school-age appropriate, and children’s and YA books will be on hand. If you’re a teacher, feel free to bring your class to listen and/or participate.

This event will be nationally-recognized and presented in concert with the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, who, according to their website, "established the National African American Read-In in 1990 to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month." Shorecrest and participants will be joining a larger honoring body; by taking part in this tradition our school becomes part of a national registry of participating groups, and we are afforded another opportunity to champion both diverse representation and the arts.
