Introducing "The Outlet" - a Podcast from The Chronicle Student Newspaper

Upper School News

Upper School student journalists Kaelie Dieter '26 and Avery Lurie '27 recently launched "The Outlet," a podcast from The Chronicle, the Shorecrest student newspaper. The podcast, now two episodes in, features interviews with Shorecrest students to inform, to entertain, and to connect the student community one conversation at a time.

"We were inspired by sessions we attended at the National Scholastic Press Association convention in November," said Avery. "We learned that you can't script a podcast. We wanted something fun and silly but also something to give a voice to students."

After connecting at the convention, Avery and Kaelie got to work planning the podcast, identifying topics, and recruiting fellow Chronicle staffers to join them. "We do everything from hosting to editing to marketing," shared Kaelie. "Sanjay [Sinha '27] is doing cameras for us now."

In episode one, Avery and Kaelie interviewed Shorecrest students De'Shawyn Long ‘28, Destiny Calhoun '28 and Sarah Ayscue '25 about their passion projects outside of school. "De'Shawyn has a successful clothing line, Destiny is a published author and Sarah does these amazing hikes," said Kaelie.

Episode two "Sweet n' Sour" featured Shorecrest seniors Ahmad Crumity '25, Max Bachinsky '25 and Eve Bonnemort '25 offering their Shorecrest advice for younger peers - while tasting increasingly sour candy provided by the podcast hosts.

In addition to the media and leadership experience, Avery and Kaelie enjoy the opportunity to get to know Shorecrest students outside of their grade level. They also credit Kristie Dowling, faculty advisor to The Chronicle, for her ongoing encouragement and support.

"She's one of those people who always tries to bring out the best in others. I know she's done that for me," shared Avery.

"I've learned that if you love something, do it. If that's what you really like, put your effort into it," reflected Kaelie. "More often than not, the things you love and work hard for will bring you happiness."

Of Avery and Kaelie, Chronicle advisor Ms. Dowling shared, "Their talent, voice, dedication, and especially their wonderful personalities have not only made 'The Outlet' a success, but have enriched the newspaper as a whole, and have certainly touched me personally. What a gift they have been."

The hosts are busy working on their third episode of "The Outlet," which will come out in the last week of April. Kaelie, Avery, Ms. Dowling and their guests arrive on campus in the early hours to film the podcast before the start of class.
