Second Grade Cultivating Knowledge through Gardening

Lower School News

The second grade Plants and Pollinators investigation is off to a colorful start! Here's a glimpse into the exciting journey the young gardeners have embarked on:

In the classroom, curious students began their gardening adventure with a deep dive into the world of pollinators. Through a great read aloud of the book "Flower Talk" they discovered that plants use colors, shapes, and scents to attract specific pollinators. This revelation inspired them to research and create a wish list of pollinator-friendly plants they'd like to grow.

With their wish lists in hand, the teachers ventured to Dolin's Nursery, a local haven for all things green. In addition to the items students requested, they stumbled upon a delightful surprise: a variety of herbs and vegetables to nurture, harvest and taste throughout the year. The students were excited to see that!

Back in the Lower School Outdoor Classroom and Garden, second graders received expert guidance from Farmer Ray (Ray Wunderlich III, a local farmer and former Shorecrest student.) Farmer Ray shared his expertise and taught the Chargers how to plant and care for both vegetables and flowers. Did you know when Ray was very young he was in a play at Shorecrest and ironically he played a farmer?!!

The second graders are now eagerly awaiting the transformation of their garden. They're not just growing plants; they're nurturing their curiosity and connection with nature. This hands-on experience is sowing the seeds of knowledge and patience.
