Diwali Cultural Exploration [Photos]

Lower School News Experiential School News

In an enriching cultural exploration, Lower School students delved into the vibrant celebration of Diwali this year, immersing themselves not only in the art studio but also across various subjects. Diwali is India’s biggest and most important holiday, also known as the “Festival of Lights.” The name comes from the row of clay lamps that are lit outside of homes to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and goodness over evil.

Students not only discovered the narratives woven into Diwali but also engaged in hands-on activities. They crafted oil lamps, known as diyas, from clay, strung together paper flowers they intricately designed, and colored characters from Diwali stories.

On November 13 and 14, the Lower School community decorated the ground of the Weiss Family Pavilion with 20 vibrant rangolis - welcoming patterns from colored rice they designed while studying radial symmetry. They also created a traditional display in the LS art gallery and were excited to taste Indian desserts, compliments of SAGE.

The Experiential School students were treated to firsthand insights into Diwali through special guests. Shorecrest parent Shivani Patel described how the holiday is celebrated in her home and asked the students questions about the holidays they celebrate. Special guest Surinder Uncle played harmonium melodies and everyone sang a Hindu song. Another Shorecrest parent, Erica Dhawan, got everyone up and moving with an interactive Bollywood dance lesson. To add a rhythmic beat, Shorecrest parents John Word and Rahul Gupta showcased their musical talents with tabla drums and Congo drums.

Thank you to the community members who assisted with this vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and joyful moments:
